Red Pencil Productions - our video tips

With the ever increasing use of online video, it is so important to ensure that your video, not only stands out but is of a high quality. With this alarming statistic in mind, we have come up with our three top tips when choosing video.

1. Choose the best company for you

The reason why this is first is because the right company will help and assist you with every step throughout the project. A simple way to see the style and the quality of work is very simple, a production company should have a showreel and previous work on their website or social media.

Please Note: A showreel is a fantastic way to see the variety of work a company has done, but bear in mind that a showreel is often a collection of the best shots from each production. Do further research into their previous work as that one amazing shot could be the only good thing about that whole piece.

Filmmaking is an art form. Anyone can pick up a camera, aim and shoot, but it is the crew behind that camera who truly make a difference. When you meet them, ask them questions, find out about their skills, knowledge or any qualifications.

2. Budget

Video is just like any other service; you get what you pay for. The truth is, that there is no set price for video as there are so many aspects that need to be considered, such as the number of days shooting, locations, actors, props, editing, special effects, sound and specialist equipment.

Our biggest piece of advice here is to simply speak openly with your chosen company and be clear with your budget. Prices can range, but if you want a video that is fiction based with fantastic special effects, actors and locations then your budget will be a lot higher than if you wanted an interview styled piece.

“Video can be a big chunk of investment, however 70% of marketing professionals report that video converts better than any other medium” (MarketingProfs)

3. Be open to ideas

My final tip nicely sums up my opening paragraph, and that is, to be open to ideas. Corporate video got a bad reputation for being cheesy, 90’s style interviews that made no impact on an audience, no emotional engagement, or was simply the manager reading the content from the ‘About Us’ page on their website. The truth is that this type of video is very limited and will not reach out to a larger audience.

Social Media loves video, but this is why it is so important for it to be exciting or engaging. A good video production company, with skill and knowledge, know how to get the best from an audience. They know how to write fantastic scripts and think of ideas that audiences can relate to, bringing out very powerful emotions.

My advice, sit down with the director, go through what you want the video to achieve and describe your company as much as you can. Then, allow the director to think of a variety of ideas that will represent your company in the finest light, go through those ideas and finally choose an idea that you, the company and your audience are excited by.

“Marketing is no longer just about the stuff you make… it’s about the story you tell” – Scott Cook
